Rooftop unit and HVAC crane lifts

Southeast Texas runs on air conditioning, and a lot of that capacity sits on commercial roofs. Packaged rooftop units (RTUs), condensers, air handlers and exhaust fans all eventually need replacing, and getting them on and off a roof safely takes a crane or boom truck.

A typical RTU job is short: the crane sets up, lifts the old unit off its curb, lands it on a trailer or the ground, then picks the new unit and sets it on the curb or adapter. Much of the work is in the planning, so the crane isn't standing by while the roof is prepped.

Boom truck or crane for an RTU?

Many single-story RTU swaps can be done with a boom truck. It's quick to set up, fits in a parking lot and costs less. A larger mobile crane comes in when:

  • The unit is large or heavy, such as a big package unit or air handler.
  • The curb is set far back from where the truck can park, so the radius is long.
  • The building is tall, or the unit has to go over a parapet, canopy or another roof.
  • Several units are being set across a large roof from one crane position.

Unit weight and distance from the curb to the parking spot decide it. The provider will check both against the machine's load chart.

Planning an RTU swap

  1. Get the weights. Use the manufacturer's submittal for the new unit's operating weight, and the nameplate or model data for the old one.
  2. Measure the reach. Note where the crane can park and how far that is from each curb, plus the roof height.
  3. Prep the roof. Have curb adapters ready, and disconnect and cap electrical, gas and condensate on the old unit before the crane arrives.
  4. Plan the rigging. Most units have lifting points and need a spreader bar so slings don't crush the cabinet. Confirm who supplies it.
  5. Control the ground. Block off the area under the lift, and plan around customers, cars and foot traffic.
  6. Watch the weather. Wind affects large, flat units more than most loads. Early morning lifts are often calmer.

Commercial AC unit crane jobs across the Golden Triangle

HVAC crane work here covers strip centers, restaurants, offices, schools, churches, medical buildings, warehouses and light industrial buildings. Some jobs are planned replacements during the cooler months. Others are urgent change-outs in the middle of summer when a unit fails and the building is getting hot. If it's urgent, say so when you call so the provider can check what's available.

Residential condensers on the ground don't need a crane. Rooftop units on homes and small buildings, and equipment that has to go over a house, sometimes do, and a boom truck usually covers it.

HVAC crane lift cost

Most HVAC lifts are short, so the minimum charge usually sets the price. Published rate sheets put cranes with an operator at est. $155–$595 per hour, with $465–$3,200 minimums (RiggingForce), with smaller machines like boom trucks toward the lower end. Travel, a spreader bar, riggers and any street closure can be added on top, and local quotes vary. Grouping several units into one visit is the easiest way to save. HVAC & Rooftop Unit Lifts FAQ

Do I need a crane to replace a rooftop AC unit?

For most commercial rooftop units, yes. Packaged rooftop units are heavy and awkward, and a boom truck or crane is the safe way to get them on and off a roof. Small residential condensers on the ground don't need one.

Can the old unit come down on the same visit?

Yes, and it usually should. Lifting the old unit off and the new unit on in one visit makes the best use of the minimum charge. Have the old unit disconnected and ready to rig before the crane arrives.

Can RTU lifts be done early in the morning?

Often, yes. Early starts are common for businesses that need to stay open and to avoid afternoon heat and wind. Ask about timing and any after-hours rates when you call.
